34. What is an eating disorder? Describe its various types. How are eating disorders linked to the development of conditions like osteoporosis and amenorrhea?
Answer:
An eating disorder refers to unhealthy eating behaviors-ranging from restrictive dieting to clinical conditions like anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa-that lead to inadequate energy availability. This disrupts normal physiological functions, particularly affecting reproductive and bone health.
Two types of eating disorder:
Anorexia Nervosa: Intense restriction of energy intake leading to significantly low body weight, disturbed body image, fear of gaining weight or becoming fat, and persistent behaviours to prevent weight gain. Two subtypes: Restricting type and Binge-eating/Purging type
Bulimia Nervosa: Recurrent binge-eating episodes followed by compensatory behaviors-vomiting, misuse of laxatives, fasting, or excessive exercise-to avoid weight gain. Body weight is often within or above normal range, yet self-evaluation is unduly influenced by shape or weight.
Links to Osteoporosis & Amenorrhea
Osteoporosis: Chronic energy restriction, frequent purging, or binging and compensatory behaviors disrupt hormonal balance-particularly estrogen-leading to decreased bone mineral density and elevated risk of osteoporosis
Amenorrhea: Occurs due to hormonal imbalance caused by inadequate calorie intake.
Low energy availability disrupts estrogen production, a hormone essential for reproductive health. Low body weight and hypoestrogenism can suppress the menstrual cycle. Bulimia and BED can also disrupt menses in some cases due to metabolic/hormonal stress
