What is meant by motivation? Tell its types?
- The word motivation is derived from the Latin word motives which means moving cause.
- There is some motivation behind whatever we do or don't do.
- Motivation has two dimensions: purpose and direction.
- Purpose – why we want to do something, and direction tells us what we should do to achieve that purpose.
- Motivation helps us to stay focused and determined to achieve our goal. That is why both purpose and direction should be towards the goal.
Motivation is broadly divided into two categories-
1. Intrinsic motivation
- When a person takes inspiration from within himself to achieve a goal. A person does a task because that task gives him satisfaction and he enjoys doing that task and he does it not because of any external factors but because of his own desire.
Example:
- If you study on your own without anyone telling you to, it means you are internally motivated to get good results.
2. Extrinsic motivation
- When a person gets inspiration to do some work from outside and not from his own passion and interest then that person is externally motivated.
Example:
- If you study because your parents will get you something you want, you are motivated by an external factor. This external factor is the gift or reward, not a strong desire.
What is meant by exercise adherence?
Exercise adherence means finding reasons to exercise i.e. when a person starts exercising without any external motivation and maintains that state then it is called exercise adherence
