P.R.I.C.E.

The PRICE rule is used for injury treatment, which means – Protection, Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation.

Protection:

  • The affected part must be protected to prevent the injury from getting worse.
  • Avoid putting weight on it by using crutches, canes, or other assistive devices.

Rest:

  • Stop using or limiting activity in the injured area to prevent aggravating the injury, increasing pain, and promoting quicker recovery.
  • Use crutches to keep weight off leg, knee, ankle or foot injuries, and apply a splint for hand, elbow or wrist injuries.

Ice:

  • Applying ice constricts the blood vessels, which reduces internal bleeding and reduces swelling.
  • Place a dry or wet cloth on the skin before applying ice and do not apply it for more than 15-20 minutes. Repeat this for 10-20 minutes every hour.

Compression:

  • Use an elastic bandage, cloth, or compression sleeve to reduce swelling around the injury.
  • Wrap the bandage properly so that blood flow is not restricted. A bandage that is too tight can increase swelling.

Elevation:

  • Elevate the injured limb above the level of the heart. This reduces swelling and pain.
  • Use pillows or other objects for this.
