Olympic Philosophy - Concept and Olympic Values ​​(Excellence, Friendship and Respect)

Olympic Philosophy (Olympism):

  • Olympics is a philosophy of life. It creates balance in the body, soul and mind.
  • Participation in sports is a person's right. Sports should be practised in the Olympic spirit.
  • The goal of Olympism is the harmonious development of people through sports. The Olympics are a global and permanent activity under the International Olympic Committee.

Olympic values:

  • Excellence
  • Respect
  • Friendship

Excellence:

  • To perform the best in sports and in professional life.
  • It is not the victory that is important, but the struggle.
  • Enjoying a healthy combination of physical, mental and willpower.

Respect:

  • Self-esteem and respect for others.
  • Respect for the natural environment and rules and regulations.

Friendship:

  • Friendship is at the core of the Olympic Games.
  • It promotes mutual understanding and harmony, both individually and among people throughout the world.

The joy of effort:

It is the fundamental right of every person to have access to physical education and sports.

Adequate opportunities should be provided in sports and physical activities so that he/she can enjoy his/her energy and efforts with positive results.

Fair treatment:

  • Fair play is about playing by the rules of the game.
  • There are many ways in which fair behavior can be displayed in sports, such as shaking hands with your opponent after the game is over, praising your opponent for his extraordinary performance after the game, etc.
  • There is a need for fair behaviour in society and in everyday life, which can be developed and strengthened through sports.

Respect for others:

  • We must accept, respect diversity and strive to build peace. We must appreciate the culture and abilities of all people in the world, regardless of their differences in race, age, gender and ability.
  • We can develop a sense of respect for others through sports, because in sports, a team consists of players from different cultures who work together to achieve the same goal and win.


Pursuit of excellence

  • Sports gives players the opportunity to make right and healthy choices in a safe and healthy environment. There is no discrimination or fear in sports, and it creates an environment that is equal for everyone.
  • Sports is a place where everyone's unique identity and culture is respected. It motivates players to become better and respect others.

Balance between body, will and mind:

  • The modern Olympic movement is not just limited to sports. It also emphasizes embracing different cultures, promoting the arts, environmental awareness, and education.
  • All these things help the youth to live a balanced and better life.
  • Physical education involves both body and mind, but it is not possible without will power. Sports is a medium to create a balance between body, will and mind.

Ancient Olympics:

  • The ancient Olympic Games began in 776 BC and were discontinued in 394 AD by the Roman emperor Theodosius I.
  • These games were organised on religious basis in honour of the Greek God Zeus.
  • Only Greek people could participate in these.
  • The winners were awarded with leaves of the olive tree.


Modern Olympics

  • The modern Olympics began in 1896 in Greece (Athens) through the efforts of Baron Pierre de Coubertin.
  • On 16 June 1894 it was decided in Paris that the Olympic Games would be held every four years.
  • The 2020 Games were held in Tokyo (Japan) in 2021 due to the Corona pandemic.

Future games:

  • The 2024 and 2028 Olympics will be held in Paris and Los Angeles.
  • The winners are awarded gold, silver and bronze medals.
  • These games are overseen by the IOC.

Olympics - emblem, motto, flag, oath and anthem

Olympic Symbol:

  • According to the Olympic Charter, the Olympic symbol consists of five interconnected rings of equal size.
  • When used in color, the colors from left to right are: blue, black, and red (top row), and yellow and green (bottom row).
  • The symbol expresses the activities of the Olympic Movement and reflects the unification of the five continents and the solidarity of athletes from all over the world in the Olympic Games.

Olympic motto:

It is made up of Citius, Altius, Fortius and Communitor. They mean faster, higher and more powerful and together. The word Communitor was used for the first time in Tokyo Olympics 2020.

Olympic Flag:

  • The Olympic symbol is recognized as the Olympic flag. The Olympic flag has Citius, Altius, Fortius Cumuniter written below the five rings, which translates to fast, high, strong and together.
  • This flag was first flown at the 1920 Antwerp Olympic Games. It is white in colour, with five interlinked rings, symbolising the five continents. The interlinked rings signify cooperation and friendship.


Olympic Oath:

New oath implemented from Sydney Olympics 2002:

"In the name of all competitors, I promise that we will participate in these Olympic Games respecting and abiding by the rules that govern them. We will participate in true sportsmanship, without using narcotics and drugs, for the glory of the Games and the honor of our teams."

Olympic Anthem:

The Olympic anthem is a musical composition called the "Olympic Anthem". It is composed by Spiro Samara.


International Olympic Committee

  • Headquarters – Lausanne, Switzerland


Functions or roles of the International Olympic Committee

  • Deciding the venue for the Olympic Games.
  • To lay down the basic rules for competitions.
  • To promote and assist sports institutions.
  • Organising sporting events and selecting host countries at games, as well as selecting new members.
  • To take action against any form of discrimination or prejudice affecting the Olympic Movement.


National Olympic Committee 

  • To promote Olympic principles and values ​​in our country.
  • To abide by the Olympic Constitution.
  • To promote development in sports and sports performance for all.
  • To take action against discrimination and violence in sports.
  • To abide by and implement the World Anti-Doping Code.
  • To support health and medical care measures for players.
  • To protect its autonomy and not to succumb to any political, religious or economic pressure.
  • Selecting and sending players and officials to the Olympics as per the Olympic Constitution.
  • To maintain cordial and harmonious relations with the administration and government of one's country as per the Olympic Constitution.
