  • Tertiary activities are related to the service sector .
  • Tertiary activities are performed by skilled workers, professionally trained experts and  consultants .
  • Tertiary activities  include both production and exchange .

1. Production - Production involves the availability of services which are consumed .

2. Exchange – Exchange includes trade, communication, transportation etc. 

  • Therefore, tertiary activities involve commercial production of services rather than production of tangible goods .



Trade and Commerce 

  • Buying and selling of goods takes place in trade 
  • The aim of all services of retail and wholesale trade is to earn profit 
  • All this work takes place in towns and cities which are called business centres

Difference between rural marketing center and urban marketing center  

Rural Marketing Centre -

  • Rural marketing nurtures nearby settlements 
  • These centres provide the services of local storage and distribution centres
  • Personal and business services are not well developed here 
  • Goods and services which are in high demand for rural people are available here 


Urban Marketing Center -

  • These centres provide special urban services
  • These centres provide local services as well as specialized goods and services 
  • These centres also provide manufactured goods 
  • These centres also provide professional services such as teachers, lawyers, counsellors and doctors 

Business 

wholesale trade 

  • The wholesale market  is constituted by a number of middlemen merchants  who buy directly from the large manufacturers  and then sell to a large number of retailers.
  • These wholesalers lend money to the retailers  and the retailers mostly  operate their business on the capital of the wholesalers.

  • Retailers sell goods directly to consumers through  hawkers, hawkers, trucks, door to door, mail order, etc.

What is transportation? 

  • Transport is a service or facility that carries people, goods and property from one place to another
  • Transport as a service provides employment to people like  drivers, conductors, loaders, unloaders, ticket collectors etc. 
  • In this way, a large number of people are engaged in all types of transport services. 
  • Tourism  has increased  due to transportation
  • Industrial activities have increased due to easy transportation


Communications 

  • Communication services involve the transmission of words and messages, facts and ideas. 
  • The invention of writing preserved messages and helped make communication dependent on means of transportation. 
  • These were actually transported by hand, animals, boat, road, rail and air. 
  •  Inventions such as mobile telephones and satellites have freed communication from transportation.


Telecommunications

  • With the advent of mobile phones and telephones, there has been a revolution in the field of communication. Now, communication is possible anywhere within minutes .  
  • Radio and Television:  Radio and television have made communication easy in broadcasting news all over the world, that is why they  are called mass communication . 
  • Newspapers became a medium to spread the message across the world . 
  • The Internet has revolutionized the field of global communications . 


Services - 

  • Teachers, lawyers, doctors, gardeners, washermen, musicians, counselors provide services .


Tourism Services

  • Tourism is a journey undertaken more for the purpose of pleasure rather than business .
  • In tourism, people temporarily  go to other places from their residence and workplace for a short period of time and enjoy entertainment .
  • Tourism is one of the major tertiary activities in the world. Under this,  local people are employed to provide services like accommodation, food, transport, entertainment and shopping  to tourists , thereby providing employment opportunities on a large scale . 

Factors affecting tourism

1. Demand - In the last few years, due to improvement in the standard of living and increased leisure time, the demand for tourism has increased considerably. Now people go on holidays more for relaxation . 

2. Transportation - With the improvement in transportation facilities, tourist areas have started to develop. Better road systems have made travel by car easier.  In recent years, the expansion of air transport has also led to growth in tourism .

factors that attract tourism 

1. Climate - Most people from cold regions expect warm and sunny weather. This is one of the main reasons for the importance of tourism in Southern Europe and Mediterranean regions .

2. Landscape - Many people undertake tourism to see attractive landscapes . These people attract tourists to places like mountains, lakes, scenic beaches etc. 

3. History and Art -  The history and art of a region add potential attraction. People visit ancient and beautiful cities, archaeological sites and enjoy seeing old forts, temples, palaces and churches .

4. Culture and Economy - If a state caters to the needs of tourists at a low cost  it becomes very popular. Homestays have emerged as a profitable business  like Heritage Homes in Goa and Medicare and Coorg in Karnataka .


What is medical tourism? What are the reasons for its rapid growth in developing countries?

  • When medical treatment is integrated into an international tourism activity it is called medical tourism .
  • India has emerged as a leading country in medical tourism in the world. People from different countries come here for treatment .
  • Developing countries like India, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore are rapidly emerging in the field of medical tourism . 
  • The main reason for this is that medical facilities in these countries are cheaper than in developed countries . 


What is meant by quaternary service?

Why are quaternary services called knowledge oriented sectors?

  • Under quaternary services, specialized knowledge of the employees is used,  in other words, it is also called knowledge-oriented sector. 
  • There has been a large substitution of services from the primary and secondary sectors to the quaternary sector.  The growth in services is a sign of the development of the economy. 
  • The same type of work can be either tertiary or quaternary,  for example, a teacher is in the tertiary category,  but if a teacher engages in a new teaching method and makes some kind of invention  , he is included in the quaternary.

  • The opportunities that come from ICT-based growth are distributed more unevenly across the world 
  • Developed countries have moved ahead in this direction while developing countries have lagged behind. This is called digital divide.

The digital divide within the country

  • The digital divide is visible even within countries 
  • For example, there is a lot of difference in the development of this technology in different parts of India and Russia.  Information and communication technology facilities  are available  in big cities and metros of the country,  whereas these facilities are not available in rural and inaccessible areas  .


Fifth activity 

  • The highest level decision making and policy making bodies perform the quinquennial functions. 
  • There are subtle differences between these and the knowledge-based industries which are usually associated with the fourth sector.

Fifth activity is the services 

  • which focus  on the creation, reorganization and interpretation of new and current ideas  ; the interpretation and use of data  ; and the evaluation of new technology  .

  • Outsourcing  is the assignment of work to an outside agency to improve efficiency and reduce costs. 
  • When outsourcing involves shifting work to overseas locations it is called offshoring,
