Successfully completing a project by working together with different individuals and groups is called management

 Meaning of Planning -  

Planning is a pre-determined process. It is made to achieve a specific goal. When we make thoughtful strategies to achieve an objective, these strategies are called plans. Under the planning, it is decided that for the success of our work, what we have to do, how to do it, when to do it, who has to do it and for how long, all these aspects are considered. 

Meaning of organization –  

After planning, the next step is to prepare the organization. Organization is the process by which program related tasks are defined and classified and assigned to various committees/individuals and their authority and responsibility are fixed.  

Activities to be performed during the organisation of a sports event 

  • Identifying and dividing different tasks 
  • to set up various committees
  • Assigning work to all committees
  • Establishing relationships by exchanging information between various committees   


Meaning of Staffing 

Recruitment is the process by which the most suitable person is selected and trained for a specific post or job. Many people are required for the successful organization of any sports event. In this, qualified people are appointed through the process of recruitment. 

Work to be done under the process of appointment in sports related work 

  • Assessing human resource needs 
  • Selection and recruitment of officers and employees for various posts
  • TRAINING AND APPOINTMENT OF OFFICERS AND EMPLOYEES 


Directing

The process of giving necessary directions to human resources, guiding them and continuously motivating them to achieve the objectives is called directing.  

Tasks performed under the process of direction in sports related work

  • Supervising your subordinates
  • Receiving messages and instructions from senior officials and delivering them to subordinates (Communication)
  • Leadership
  • Motivate your subordinates to achieve their goals (Motivation)


Controlling

Control refers to the process by which things are done according to a pre-determined plan 

Functions performed under the process of control in sports related work 

  • Setting standards
  • Measurement of actual and its comparison
  • Analysis of possible reasons for not getting success as expected
  • Taking corrective action as required


Various Committees and their Responsibilities 

If any program is to be organized successfully, then an organized team is needed for it. Similarly, various committees are also required for the successful organization of sports competitions. These committees play an important role in the successful conduct of sports competitions.

Functions of various committees before the tournament/competition

Organizing/Management Committee –

This committee is mainly responsible for all the activities related to organizing and conducting the sports competition. This committee forms various committees about a month in advance and ensures their responsibilities.

Publicity Committee-

The work of this committee is 3 to 4 weeks prior to any competition and it disseminates information regarding the date, venue and programme of the competition.

Purchase Committee –

The items and equipment to be used in the competition must be purchased and inspected before the competition.

Sports Grounds and Equipment Committee -

This committee prepares the ground for the sports competition. The ground should be ready about 2 days before the competition.

Food and Housing Committee -

This committee decides before the competition where the teams are to stay, where the food arrangements are to be made and how many people are to be accommodated, separate accommodation arrangements have to be made for boys and girls, it is also the responsibility of this committee to take care of security.

First aid committee –

The first task of this committee is to arrange for the equipment that is needed in case of an injury during the competition, before the competition.

Transport Committee –

The committee outlines what type of transportation and how much it will require during the competition.

Committee for Officers-

Before the competition, selects the umpires, referees, recorders and lap scorers etc. and ensures their consent.

Decoration and Ceremony Committee -

Before the competition, this committee decides how much decoration is to be done where, such as the ground, stadium, stage etc.


Functions of various committees during the tournament/competition

Organizing/Management Committee –

During the competition, the main work of this committee is to keep an eye on all the work, whether everyone is doing their work properly or not, if there is any deficiency somewhere then it is also the work of this committee to remove it.

Purchase Committee –

If any equipment or item is required during the competition then it is the responsibility of the purchasing committee to make that equipment or item available as quickly as possible.

Transport Committee –

The transport committee is largely responsible for ensuring that the competition is conducted properly and on time. It is this committee that is responsible for taking the teams to their accommodation and from there to the playing ground.

Food and Housing Committee -

During the competition, this committee is responsible for providing food to all the players and officials. If any item is required at the accommodation, it is also its responsibility to provide that item.

First aid committee -

Players often get injured during competition. At such times, the main responsibility of this committee is to provide first aid to the injured player as quickly as possible and if the injury is serious, to immediately take him to a good doctor.

Committee for Officers-

If any official faces any problem during the competition then it is the work of this committee to solve that problem and make arrangement for another official.

Proclamation committee-

During the competition, the programme is organized according to the stage management. The announcement committee gives information about whose match is to be played and which event is to be held when.

Publicity Committee- 

Providing information about the expenditure on publicity after the competition to the organizing committee. Sends a report to the media.

Purchase Committee – 

Providing information regarding expenditure on equipment and items to the organising committee.

Finance Committee – 

Preparing the account of total income and expenditure in the competition and reviewing it with the budget

First aid committee- 

To provide all material and information related to first aid to the organising committee.

Transport Committee – 

Provide all information after the competition.

Food and Housing Committee- 

If there is any damage to the accommodation site, get it repaired and give all the information to the organizing committee.

Competition Program Committee - 

Providing certificates to all teams, preparing all records and providing information related to all teams participating in the competition to the organising committee

Committee for Officers- 

After the competition, all the officials will be given their honorarium and a letter of thanks.

Play Ground Equipment Committee- 

After the competition, this committee will make available all the equipment used to the management committee and if there is any damage to the ground then this committee will also be responsible for getting it repaired.

Prize Distribution Committee – 

In collaboration with decoration and ceremony committee, provide all information and material to the organising committee. Distribute prizes. 


Different types of sports tournaments 

  • Knock Out Tournament-
  • League Tournament / Round Robin Tournament -

  • Challenge Tournament - 

Meaning of tournament - 

A tournament is a series of matches, at the end of which one team wins and all the other teams lose the matches. 

Knock Out Tournament- 

In this type of competition, the team that loses is eliminated. Only the winning teams remain in the competition.


  • League Tournament - 
  • Single League Tournament - 
  • Double League Tournament - 

League Tournament- 

Every team participating in a league tournament must play every other team once (this happens in a single league tournament). In a double league tournament, every team plays every other team twice. The winning team is declared on the basis of points obtained from win and loss.


Intramurals and Extramurals 

Intramurals -

Games that are played inside the four walls Intramurals include those activities that can be organized within the four walls of the school. In this tournaments are organized between the players of the school or institution. 

Objectives of Intramurals

  • Providing sports opportunities to students 
  • All-round development of students 
  • To develop sportsmanship in players 
  • To develop a sense of leadership and cooperation in children
  • Providing opportunities for students to learn various sports and skills
  • Identifying talented players 
  • Physical development of children and attention to health 

Importance of Intramurals 

  • Intramural activities provide healthy entertainment to students 
  • By participating in these, the energy of the students is utilized in the right place. 
  • Intramurals activities help develop students' interest and knowledge of sports
  • Develops sports spirit in students 
  • Develops social skills in students  


Extramurals 

Games that are played outside the school premises Extramurals include those activities that can be organized outside the school premises. In this tournaments are organized between the players of two or more schools or institutions. 

Objectives of Extramurals

1. To achieve high performance at the highest level of tournaments,

2. To develop a sense of integration with other institutions,

3. To provide opportunities to choose a career in sports,

4. To promote social, cultural, economic development through sports.

Importance of extramurals 

1. To assist in personality development of players.

2. To develop leadership qualities in students.

3. To know the rules and regulations of various sports.

4. To control the level of aggression among players.

5. To develop the spirit of competition.

6. To improve the level of sports.


Community Sports Programs -

Community sports programs are sports, exercise and fitness activities  that provide opportunities to participate and are community-based activities.  Community sports programs serve as health and development activities for school children, adults, the elderly and various other socially vulnerable community members.  Community sports are events organized for a variety of purposes, including recreational, etc., involving citizens and people living in the society.

The purpose of organizing community games is -

  • for social campaign 
  • To discover talent in society 
  • For entertainment 
  • for the good health of the people

  • Run for specific cause
  • Run for unity
  • Run for awareness

sports day 

It is an important event which is held once a year in most of the residential, community, schools.  It is not only an event to showcase the abilities and skills of children and youth on the playground but also an opportunity for the members of the society to meet each other, solve problems, greet each other, etc. on the sports day. 

Importance of sports day – 

(i) Leadership develops among students.

(ii) Entertainment is provided to the students.

(iii) Makes students healthy.

(iv) Children learn cooperation, unity, respect for each other.

health run

Such races are organised to improve the health of the society and maintain good health. Health races are also organised with the aim of creating awareness about the importance of physical activities. The aim of the runners in this race is not to win but to participate in competitions.  This is not a professional race so there is no need to run long distances.

Importance of health run – 

1. Helps in increasing the functioning of respiratory system,

2. Lower chances of heart disease,

3. Helps in reducing obesity,

4. Increases flexibility and stamina,

5. Provides stress relief and entertainment.

  • Such races are organized to improve the health of the society and to maintain good health. 
  • Health runs are also organised with the aim of creating awareness about the importance of physical activities. 
  • The aim of the runners in this race is not to win but to participate in the competitions. 
  • This is not a professional race so there is no need to run long distances.

run for fun

The purpose of such races is to spread the message of physical fitness and staying fit among the people.  Sometimes such races may be organized for a specific purpose- fund raising etc.  In schools such races attract children and their parents.  These races can be organized for any age group.  However, the physical education teacher should be cautious in this race and plan it carefully to avoid any kind of accident. Age, mobility, type of activities to be involved should be taken into account.  Lemon and spoon race, sack race, three legged race, parent and child race, teacher and child race, art race, road race etc. are examples of such races.

Run for specific cause

This type of event is usually organized to spread awareness about social issues like cleanliness, promoting green environment, etc. The purpose of such events is to spread awareness for a certain cause in the society or to collect donations, etc. Specific causes - cancer, AIDS, gender inequality, etc. can be examples of this race.

Run for unity

The purpose of such a race is to promote the spirit of integrity and brotherhood within a community, state, nation or among different religions. Such events help in developing a sense of bonding and unity among people. Ekta Run is organized every year on 31 October on the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai
